About Us

This webpage provides a little background information to help you get to know BGS. You will also find out about our current science priorities and the strategic pillars we rely on to achieve them.

Who We Are

This webpage provides a little background information to help you get to know us. We’ll show you what we do at the British Geological Survey and how a career in geosciences can tackle global challenges and make a real difference to society.

Introduction

The British Geological Survey or BGS is a not-for-profit public body that operates within the Natural Environment Research Council (also known as NERC). We work closely with both governmental and non-governmental organisations to develop geoscience-related knowledge and infrastructure, to support society to:
  • use its natural resources responsibly and sustainably
  • manage environmental change
  • be resilient to environmental hazards
As one of the oldest geological surveys in the world, we are dedicated to the public and take pride in our responsibilities to:
  • give impartial and independent geoscientific advice
  • hold the national repository of data and knowledge for geoscience
  • provide analytical facilities to support earth science research

What do our students think?

"It is very difficult to find work experience in this sector as it is not widely taught and doesn't have a lot of government funding compared to other sciences. Even when I have tried to do my own research, a lot of sources have been paywalled. Thank you for creating this programme and allowing geology to become a more well-known industry."
